From the United States Department of Justice: Sexual assault is any type of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient. Falling under the definition of sexual assault are sexual activities such as forced sexual intercourse, forcible sodomy, child molestation, incest, fondling, and attempted rape.

You have been through a traumatic event. Getting help early can help you begin to deal with the emotional and physical pain of sexual assault.
Our Sexual Assault Services Include:
Forensic Medical Exam Support
Trained volunteers and/or staff are available to accompany victims for the FME, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Counseling
Sessions are available throughout Fannin, Gilmer, and Pickens (as funding is available).
Legal Advocacy
For court hearings and conferences with the District Attorney’s Office, as well as with Law Enforcement if you chose to file a report.
Victim Compensation
Reimbursement is available for expenses including medical bills, loss of earnings, mental health counseling, and other financial costs. Eligibility requirements and timelines apply.
Follow Up Support
Our agency will initiate contact, in person or by telephone, to survivors after initial services have been provided.
What To Do:
Go To A Safe Place
Contact a friend, relative, neighbor, teacher, counselor, etc. Do not feel that you are alone; we are here to give you the emotional support you need.
Seek Medical Attention
As soon as possible, go to a hospital or health center for an examination and treatment of possible venereal disease and pregnancy.
You have the right to a Forensic Medical Exam or Rape Kit within three days of the incident.
Consider Reporting
Whether or not you plan to file charges immediately, reporting the attack will give you the opportunity to press charges at a later time.
SEXUAL ASSAULT STATISTICS
- Sexual Assaults have soared to 236 percent, with 37 reported so far this year, compared to 11 at the same time in 2021
- Every 68 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted
- 1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime
- A majority of child victims are 12-17
- Only 25 out of every 1,000 perpetrators will end up in prison
- 6,053 military members reported experiencing sexual assault during military service in 2018
- An estimated 80,600 inmates each year experience sexual violence while in prison or jail
- An estimated 17.7 million American women had been victims of attempted or completed rape
- Women ages 18-24 who are college students are 3 times more likely than women in general to experience sexual violence. Females of the same age who are not enrolled in college are 4 times more likely
